The International Relations Commission of Cuba's legislature, the National Assembly of People's Power, on Thursday urged the international community to act against the U.S. blockade on the Caribbean country.
"For 47 years, the United States has applied systematic, uninterrupted and ferocious sanctions against Cuba," the commission said in a statement, describing it as a "real economic war designed to subject the Cuban people to hunger and desperation."
The statement said that the economic, trade and financial blockade had worsened and strengthened despite near-unanimous opposition from across the world.
The statement added that the blockade had met the UN definition of "an act perpetrated with the intention of partially or wholly destroying a national, ethnic, racial or religious group."
Cuba estimates that the blockade has caused 86 billion U.S. dollars worth of damage to the island's economy to date.
On Nov. 8, Cuba will present a report on the blockade to the UN General Assembly, seeking an immediate end to the blockade.
