Hong Kong will launch a three- month trial on solid waste charging scheme next month, the Environmental Protection Department of Hong Kong said Wednesday.
It said the trial on Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Charging is aiming at examining logistical arrangements for waste recovery and disposal in different housing settings for reference in the feasibility study of introducing a variable rate charging scheme.
To introduce a charging scheme on solid waste disposal is always considered a way to make people realize their responsibility in environment protection. However the suggestion was turned down long before Hong Kong's return to its motherland. And now the government is trying again to introduce a charging scheme in strengthening environment protection.
During the trial period, participating residents will be given "designated bags" for disposal of different kinds of domestic waste. The department will collect the relevant data and conduct a questionnaire survey to collect views and opinions from residents participating in the scheme. There won't be any charge during the trial period.
