Reuters is to abide by laws in all the countries it operates, said Tom Glocer, chief executive officer of the Reuters Corp., on Tuesday.

Glocer said Reuters has always abided by the laws of the countries in which is operates, during a meeting with the Xinhua News Agency's president Tian Congming. He said it's important to understand laws and how different laws interact.

The two leaders exchanged views on the Measures for Administering the Release of News and Information in China by Foreign News Agencies, which Xinhua promulgated on Sept. 10.

Tian recalled Premier Wen Jiabao's remarks on this issue at a press conference with British Prime Minister Tony Blair, in which Wen expressed the hope and belief that Chinese laws were respected by foreign media and information institutions in China.

Glocer expressed appreciation for Tian's explanation, saying he had "great understanding" of this issue. He also proposed to establish a joint working team to cement details of further cooperation between the two agencies.

The Reuters and Xinhua signed an agreement on news exchanges in 1957.
