Films aspiring for Oscar nomination to be shown at Warsaw Festival

Ten films contending for the nomination of the Academy Award (Oscar) in the foreign film category will be shown at the 22nd Warsaw International Film Festival WMFF, which starts in Warsaw later this week, the PAP news agency reported.

Among them will be Russia's Fyodor Bondarchuk's "The 9th Company" and "Retrieval" by Slawomir Fabicki of Poland, festival organizers told PAP Monday.

The 22nd WMFF will be held between Oct. 6 and 15.

"The 9th Company" directed by the son of famous Sergei Bondarchuk is based on events of the Soviet campaign in Afghanistan.

German candidate "The Lives of Others" by Florian Henckel- Donnersmarck, the story of a playwright and an actress, depicts operations of secret agents in East Germany in the 1980s.

Slawomir Fabicki's "Retrieval" is the Polish film striving for the nomination. It tells the story of a teenage Silesian boy falling in love with a Ukrainian woman immigrant.

Other Oscar-aspiring films are "White Palms" of Hungary, "The Contact" from Macedonia, "The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros" of the Philippines, "The Way I Spent the End of the World" from Romania and otherwise.

All in all, 83 films are likely to strive for the foreign film nominations. The nominations will be announced on Jan. 23, 2007, and the Awards presented on Feb. 25.
