Mob drama "The Departed" topped the box office in the United States over the weekend, bringing in 26.9 million U.S. dollars, showed final figures released on Monday.
"The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning," the latest installment stemming from the original 1974 horror movie, came in second place, grossing 18.5 million dollars, according to Encino-based box office tracker Exhibitor Relations, Inc..
Last week's leader, "Open Season," slipped to third, with 15.6 million dollars. The animated flick, about animals banding together for protection during hunting season, brought in 23.6 million dollars the previous weekend.
In fourth place, with 11.4 million dollars , was love story "Employee of the Month".
Action-adventure drama "The Guardian" took in 9.6 million dollars in its second week at the box office, dropping from second to fifth place.
Rounding out the top 12: "Jackass: Number Two" (6.5 million dollars); " School for Scoundrels" (3.4 million dollars); "Jet Li's Fearless" (2.3 million dollars); "Gridiron Gang" (2.2 million dollars); "The Illusionist" (1.9 million dollars); " Little Miss Sunshine" (1.3 million dollars); and "Flyboys" (1 million dollars).
The top 12 films grossed 100.7 million dollars over the weekend, making it the second "up" weekend in a row.
