The New York Yankees was eliminated from the playoffs after a Saturday's 3-8 defeat by the Detroit Tigers in their best-of-five divisional series, in which the scores were 1-3.
The win sends Detroit on to face the Oakland Athletics for the American League Championship Series starting on Tuesday.
Based on a smothering performance on the post-season debut by right-hander Jeremy Bonderman, the Tigers played to the best in the game.
The 23-year-old allowed just five hits and one run through 8 1/3 innings against a batting corps touted as one of the greatest of its generation.
Held scoreless through the first six innings, the Yankees line-up went 20 consecutive innings without scoring against Tigers pitchers over three consecutive playoff losses. It marked New York's longest scoring drought of the season.
Meanwhile, the Tigers combined for 13 hits, knocking out Yankees starter Jaret Wright in just three innings and forcing New York to rotate through five pitchers.
