Nepali Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala has said that the development of a nation would be possible only through the parliamentary system, according to a local media's report Sunday.

"History is a proof that democracy is indispensable for development and continuity of development works bring stability to democracy," Koirala was quoted by Sunday's The Rising Nepal, the government-run English newspaper, as saying.

Launching the Nepali version of the book "Stages and Challenges of Nepalese Political Economy -- In Support of Democracy", written by Finance Minister Ram Sharan Mahat, here Saturday, Koirala opined that a democratic system of governance was inevitable for sustainable development.

"The fact that development could take place only in a democracy has been proved from the governance system adopted in the country in the past," he said, adding that democracy itself seems to have become a failure as the successive governments came to power over the last 12 years could not give continuity to development works.

Koirala stressed that every one's attention should be focused on moving ahead politics and economic development in a balanced way as both these are related topics.
