Sri Lankan Air Force raids Tiger's targets

The Sri Lankan Air Force raided three targets of the Tamil Tigers in the north and east Friday morning, causing heavy damages to the targets, said the military.

The Media Center for National Security said in a statement that one target engaged by the Air Force at 9:30 a.m. (0400 GMT) was a Tiger training and transit base located at Kadiraweli in the east.

The other two targets being attacked at around 10:45 a.m. (0515 GMT) were sea tiger bases located along the coast of Mannar in the north.

"Intelligence sources confirmed that the tigers have suffered seriously due to these attacks and these bases were used to launch attacks at the security force's detachments," said the statement.

The attacks came after the failed talks in Geneva between the government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam as the two sides could not agree on humanitarian issues and the question of opening the main A9 highway to the north.

The government said the highway would be re-opened only after the rebels completely stopped violence and the rebels said no further talks could be held until the highway was opened.

More than 64,000 people were killed in Sri Lanka's ethnic conflict from 1980s to 2002 when the Norwegians brokered a ceasefire agreement between the two parties.
