The Tanzania National Assembly has elected the country's share of nine representatives to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), according to reports on Friday.
The Tanzanian parliament made the election in Dodoma where the lawmakers are sitting in their fifth session of the year.
Each of the three East African Community (EAC) member states, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, has nine representatives in the community parliament and they are elected by their respective parliaments.
The newly-elected EALA members from Tanzania are Didas Masaburi, George Francis Nangale, Aman Walid Kabourou, Fortunatus Masha, Abdallah Ali Hassan Mwinyi, Said Gharib Bilal, Sebtuu Nassor, Janet Deo Mmari and Kate Sylvia Kamba. Three of them are women.
Inaugurated in November 2001, the EALA also has five ex-officio members. These include three East African cooperation ministers from the three member states, the secretary-general and the counsel to the EAC, of which EALA is the independent legislative arm.
