Outfielder Barry Bonds of San Francisco Giants in the Major League Baseball, had elbow surgery and will rest for few weeks.
"I had an operation on my elbow Monday to clean up the bone chips which were causing irritation and swelling throughout the year," Bonds said on his Web site. "As soon as I heal in the next few weeks, I will begin my offseason training."
With 734 career home runs, Bonds is within striking distance next season -- just 21 -- of Hank Aaron's Major League Baseball record of 755.
But it's not clear whether the 42-year-old Bonds -- under a cloud of allegations of past steroid use and a related federal investigation into possible perjury before a grand jury about doping -- will be back in a Giants uniform next year.
Bonds will be a free agent this winter, able to sign a contract with any team. He makes 18 million U.S. dollars a year under current terms.
