The Johannesburg Security Exchange (JSE) was pushed into new record territory by commodity counters on Monday, led in the main by industry heavyweight Anglo American, which charged ahead by 12.65 rand on the day.
The JSE posted gains of one percent on Thursday and ended on a fresh closing high of 22,491 points, but the market failed to again close above this mark on Friday.
However the rally on gold turned the tables on the Doubting Thomas's on Monday and by 05:00 p.m. local time (1500 GMT), the all share index was up 0.80 percent to a new record close of 22, 553, with gold leading the way.
The gold index leapt by 3.28 percent, platinum was 1.30 percent firmer and resources boomed up by 2.47 percent. Propping up the rear were financials (down 0.50 percent), banks (down 1.14 percent) and industrials (down 0.44 percent).
