An anti-terrorism underwater security system, proved to be very successful during trials at the 2006 Qingdao International Regatta, has been developed by Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). The system is expected to operate as a safeguard during the 2008 Olympic Games.
In recent years, the international community has increased its efforts to fight terrorism. Many developed countries have established underwater anti-terror security systems as an important part of precautions against terrorist attacks.
China's underwater security monitoring system, which was developed independently, was developed primarily to meet safety concerns surrounding the 2008 Olympic Games.
The system incorporates technology developed by the Institute of Acoustics, the Shenyang Institute of Automation and the Xi'an Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics, each of which is a department of CAS.
Apart from providing a security service for large-scale activities, the system can also be employed for the protection of harbor channels, large piers and offshore oil drilling platforms.
