Nigeria supports WTO's objective: president

Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo said Wednesday Nigeria would support the World Trade Organization (WTO) to ensure it meet its objective.

Meeting with visiting WTO Director-General Pascal Lamy in his presidential villa in the capital Abuja, Obasanjo said Nigeria would support efforts to resume negotiations for acceptable agreement in the Doha Round of talks on world trade.

"We will do everything to help achieve what is in the best interest of the world," he said.

"We should have an agreement to make every member feel he has something in it, no matter the size of population or economy," he added.

The president said it was in the global interest that the Doha Round be moved forward, particularly for Africa.

He accepted the challenge to contribute to the efforts at resumption of the talks.

Speaking earlier, Lamy briefed Obasanjo about on-going efforts to resume the Doha Round of talks and solicited his political support, especially because "Africa will lose a lot if the deadlocked talks fail to resume."
