World number one Roger Federer did not break into a sweat to make quarterfinals at the hometown Swiss Indoors as he swept out Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain 6-2, 6-0 in the second round on Thursday.
The Swiss mogul, trying to win the tournament for the first time, next plays another Spaniard, fifth seed David Ferrer.
Federer has twice reached the final in the tournament, but lost to Thomas Enqvist in 2000 and to Tim Henman a year later. He did not play in it the last two years because of injuries.
In the earlier matches, second-seeded David Nalbandian from Argentina and third-seeded Fernando Gonzalez of Chile both saved match points and won last-set tiebreakers to keep alive their qualifying bids for the eight-man Shanghai Masters Cup next month.
Friday's quarterfinal lineup features Federer against David Ferrer, Nalbandian versus Stanislas Wawrinka, Gonzalez versus Juan Martin Del Potro, and No. 7 Jose Acasuso against Paradorn Srichaphan.
