U.S. Open champion Maria Sharapova from Russia reached the quarterfinals by beating Eleni Daniilidou of Greece 7-5, 6-1 at Linz WTA open, Austria on Thursday.

Sharapova, who made the quarterfinals for the 13th time in 14 tournaments this year, broke Daniilidou at 5-5 in the first set and never looked back.

The top seed failed to reach the quarterfinals only at the French Open. She will play fifth-seeded Ana Ivanovic in the next round at Linz.

Third-seeded Patty Schnyder, last year's runner-up, rallied to beat wild card Nathalie Dechy of France 6-7 (1-7), 6-4, 6-3.

Schnyder led 5-2 before losing the first set. In the second and third she converted all four of her break points. Up coming for the Swiss will be Russian Zvonareva.

Samantha Stosur of Australia ousted Kremlin Cup winner, seventh-seeded Anna Chakvetadze, 6-4, 6-4. Stosur plays defending champion Nadia Petrova of Russia next.

Sixth-seeded Jelena Jankovic of Serbia battled past Elena Vesnina of Russia 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 6-2 and will face fourth-seeded Nicole Vaidisova on Friday.
