South Korea successfully test-fires cruise missile
Senior South Korean government officials announced here on Tuesday that the country has recently developed a cruise missile with a range of up to 1,000 kilometers, and test-fired it successfully.
Senior government officials said that South Korea has relied on its own technology to develop the cruise missile. In the test-firing, the missile accurately struck the target, they said.
The missile has the capability of hitting the whole Korean Peninsula and parts of Asia, and its navigation and terrain recognition systems can ensure a high percentage of hits, South Korean media reported.
The South Korean military announced in September that it had successfully developed a cruise missile with a range of around 500 kilometers.
The country is reportedly developing a cruise missile with a range of up to 1,500 kilometers.
According to an accord reached between South Korea and the United States in 2001, the Asian country is banned to develop missiles with a range of over 300 kilometers, but if it develops missiles capable of carrying a warhead of less than 500 kilograms, there is no limit to the range of the missiles.
