Peace restored in Zambia: Police chief
Zambia's police chief has assured that calm has been restored countrywide following pockets of violence in some parts of Lusaka and the Copperbelt province early this week after provisional election results were announced.
Inspector General of Police Ephraim Mateyo said here Wednesday that reports from all parts of the country have indicated that calm has since been retained in the nation.
Political leaders helped the police restore calm by appealing to their sympathizers not to resort to violence, Mateyo said.
He told the Zambia News and Information Services that the action taken by political leaders was a measure of political maturity which should be commended.
Mateyo noted the need for peace in the nation, saying the police service stands ready to work with political parties and the Zambian citizenry in ensuring that peace and tranquillity continue to prevail in the country.
Meanwhile, the police are still assessing the extent of damage caused by rioters expressing their displeasure at the results of the elections held last Thursday.
