"Prestige" tops North American box office

"The Prestige," a magical thriller about the rivalry between two London magicians for the highest fame of the trade, brought in estimated 14.8 million dollars this weekend to win the top spot at the North American box office.

Last week's leader, Martin Scorsese's mob drama "The Departed," stayed put in second place, bringing in about 13.7 million dollars over the weekend.

Meanwhile, "Flags of our Fathers" by two-time Oscar-winning director Clint Eastwood came in third with estimated 10.2 million dollars. The film tells the story about the six soldiers who raised the American flag over Iwo Jima during World War II and were forever branded in American history in an iconic photograph.

The animated "Open Season," about animals banding together for protection during hunting season, held the fourth spot with 8 million dollars, while "Flicka," the motion picture adaptation of a best-selling Children's novel about a willful girl and her horse tied for fifth with "The Grudge 2" with about 7.7 million dollar.

The weekend's top 12 films in the United States and Canada grossed estimated 8890 million dollars, making it the fourth "up" weekend in a row. The gross for the top 12 was 7020 million in the year-ago period.
