Boonen skips Porsche endurance cycling race

Former world champion Tom Boonen of Belgium has decided to skip the Porsche 996 10-hour endurance cycling race, local reports said Saturday.

The 25-year-old rider, who has won a number of prestigious one-day cycling classics wins, was due to compete in the November 11 race at the Zolder race track.

However, Boonen's Quick Step team has persuaded him not to take the risk.

"Tom's an adult. He's driving because he wants to but I'm hoping he's taken out some insurance," said team manager Patrick Lefevere.
