Mozambican President Armando Guebuza on Thursday laid the foundation stone for a monument to the first president of independent Mozambique, Samora Machel, to be built at the Independence Square, in front of Maputo City Hall.
This, said Guebuza, will be an "indelible tribute" to Samora Machel, and a sign of consolidation of peace and national unity, reported the Mozambique News Agency (AIM) Friday.
Guebuza emphasized that "the best and most permanent way of paying tribute to the founder of the Mozambican nation is to build a country where national unity is continually consolidated."
"Our decision to conduct this ceremony here, at Independence Square in Maputo is to crystallize the bond between this place and the role of President Samora Machel as a mobilizer of his people and those from other parts of the world in the defense of noble causes," said Guebuza
Guebuza recalled that the Independence Square was the stage of great political events, deeply linked to Machel's activities as the head of the young republic, which won independence from Portuguese rule in 1975.
