Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi called on Malaysians to strengthen the tradition of celebrating festivals together to forge closer integration between the races.
With hard work, sincerity and understanding, Malaysians of various races and cultures have exploited this diversity as a unique feature in making the country strong and prosperous, said Badawi in his message on the Hindu Festival of Lights, also known as Deepavali.
"It is my hope that the unique practice of celebrating the festivals together in peace and harmony will be continued," Badawi was quoted as saying by the New Straits Times on Friday.
Deepavali, a holy day for the Hindus and celebrated together with other Malaysians of all backgrounds, has become one of the major festivals of Malaysia, said the prime minister.
Badawi wished all Malaysians of Hindu faith a happy Deepavali and hoped this special day will be celebrated together with the family, friends and loved ones.
"At the same time, the government will continue to ensure that all parties continue to uphold religious freedom in the context of our plural society which is unique," said the Malaysian leader.
Malaysians of Hindu faith will celebrate Deepavali on Saturday. In Hinduism, light stands for the good, love, truth and divinity. On Deepavali day, people light oil lamps inside and outside their houses so that the atmosphere becomes bright and cheerful. Source: Xinhua
