Sixth seed American Andy Roddick and world number eight Spaniard Tommy Robredo bowed out of the third round of the Madrid Masters tennis tournament with straight sets defeats here on Thursday.
Czech Tomas Berdych defeated Roddick 7-6 and 6-3 while unseeded Robby Ginepri of the United States beat Robredo 6-3 7-6.
Berdych and Roddick held firm on their serves in the first set until the tiebreak where the 21-year-old Czech won 9-7.
Complaining of pain in the left thigh, Roddick received treatment at 3-2 down in the second set before Berdych broke in the next game and scored his first victory in their meetings
Berdych will next play the winner between defending champion Rafael Nadal and 13th-seeded German Tommy Haas in the quarter-finals.
Ginepri, who lost to Nadal in the semis last year, put Robredo under early pressure, breaking in the second game and holding his serve to take the first set 6-3.
He led over Robredo 5-4 in the second before the seventh seed broke back to love when Ginepri was serving for the match.
In the tiebreak, it was Ginepri who won through 7-3 to earn himself a quarter-final showdown against the winner between world number one Roger Federer and Sweden's Robin Soderling.
