U.S. soldier shot dead in northern Iraq

A U.S. soldier was killed in fighting near the northern city of Kirkuk on Tuesday, the military said on Wednesday.

The U.S. soldier, assigned to 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat team, 25th Infantry Division, was killed when received wounds sustained due to "enemy action" near Kirkuk on Oct. 3, the military said in a statement.

More than 2,720 U.S. soldiers have been killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003.
