"A Multi-National Division - Baghdad Soldier was killed at approximately 1:10 p.m. Oct. 17 when the vehicle he was riding in was struck by an improvised-explosive device north of Baghdad," the military said in a statement.

The U.S. military announced earlier the death of nine U.S. troops in separate incidents on Tuesday, including three soldiers in northeast of Baghdad.

"Three Task Force Lightning Soldiers assigned to 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, were killed and one was wounded Oct. 17," the military said in a statement.

The soldiers were killed as a result of "enemy action" while conducting operations in Diyala Province, the statement added.

A fourth soldier was killed at around 9:30 a.m. (0630 GMT) Tuesday when "terrorists" attacked his patrol with small arms fire in northern Baghdad, the U.S. military said.

In another statement, a marine assigned to Regimental Combat Team 7 died of wounds sustained in clashes in the volatile Anbar province in western Iraq.

Earlier, the U.S. military said four American soldiers were killed Tuesday when a roadside bomb struck their vehicle in west of the capital.

"The soldiers assigned to Multi-National Division-Baghdad were killed at about 6:50 a.m. (0350 GMT) on Oct. 17 in west of Baghdad, " the military said in a separate statement.
