Almost four in five French don't want President Jacques Chirac to run for a third term when his term expires in May, an opinion poll showed on Tuesday.
Seventy-seven percent of those polled don't want Chirac, 73, to seek reelection next year, and 19 percent said he should run, according to the poll for VSD magazine.
Inside Chirac's governing party, the Union for a Popular Movement (UMP), 82 percent don't want the president to run.
Meanwhile, 55 percent of the French polled say Chirac is a " very good" or "rather good" president, and 39 percent said he is very or rather bad, the poll showed.
The poll made telephone investigation of 1,004 people aged 18 or more representing a sample of France's population. It did not give a margin of error.
