According to China's National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), 113.8 million people aged 15 or more are unable to read, and 83.83 million of those are women, accounting for more than 70 percent.

A senior official from the Ministry of Education said the country's illiterate population is constituted mainly of people who are either poor, live on plateaus, or belong to a minority group.
