Polish President Lech Kaczynski on Monday congratulated Ban Ki-moon on his appointment as the next U.N. secretary-general, the PAP news agency quoted the Poland's Presidential Chancellery as saying.
"I am convinced that your appointment is a confirmation of the belief of the Security Council and General Assembly that you will be a perfect leader of the organization which has done so much for world peace and security, social aid, development and democracy," Kaczynski wrote in a congratulatory message.
"Let me assure you that Poland will actively support the current efforts to reform the United Nations and more effectively implement its Charter," the president wrote.
Ban Ki-moon was appointed by the UN General Assembly on Friday as the the eighth secretary-general in the UN's 60-year history, and he is to succeed Kofi Annan who steps down on Dec. 31.
