Three people were killed and five others wounded on Monday when clashes broke out between gunmen and policemen in a downtown Baghdad square, a police source said.
The clashes erupted between unknown gunmen and policemen backed by Iraqi army soldiers in the Maidan Square, the source said on condition of anonymity.
U.S. and Iraqi security forces rushed to the scene and ended the hour-long conflict after the gunmen fled, the source said.
Three civilians were killed in the clash and five others, including an Iraqi soldier, were wounded, he added.
Insurgents frequently attack Iraqi security forces, accusing them of collaboration with U.S. occupation.
