Over 60 Sri Lankan navy personnel were killed Monday afternoon in a suicide bomb attack blamed on the Tamil Tiger rebels, police and military sources said.
The attack took place near Habarana, 173 km northeast of the capital Colombo around 1:40 p.m. local time (0810 GMT) at a transit point of Navy personnel in the village of Digampathaha.
A bomb laden truck of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam ( LTTE) came and blasted itself with sailors who had alighted from their buses becoming victims to the blast.
A navy spokesman said that some 63 personnel had died while 60 more injured were dispatched to the hospital in Dambulla, the north central town near Habarana.
The attack came less than two weeks before the proposed direct talks between the government and the LTTE.
And this is continuation of violence which cost over 2000 lives since the end of 2005 endangering the Norwegian backed process to end the island's separatist armed conflict.
