Jordanian King Abdullah II stressed here Sunday the importance of intensifying efforts to rearrange the Palestinian internal scene and achieve its national unity.
King Abdullah made the call in a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas who arrived in Jordan earlier in the day on a two-day visit, reported Jordan's official Petra news agency.
During the talks, Abdullah warned Abbas that inter-Palestinian tensions would have negative repercussions on the Palestinian cause of establishing an independent state on their own soil, stressing that the time was crucial at the current stage.
He reiterated that the key to restoring stability and security in the region lies in finding a just solution to the Palestinian issue that would be accepted and defended by the coming generations.
The two-state solution, designed to end decades of Palestinian- Israeli conflict and achieve comprehensive settlement, is a logical and internationally accepted one, the Jordanian king was quoted as saying.
King Abdullah also reaffirmed that Jordan was keen to promote unity among the Palestinians and help them in regaining their legitimate rights.
For his part, Abbas said that the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) was working to form a national unity government that serves the aspirations of the Palestinian people.
He expressed appreciation for Jordan's continued efforts to support the Palestinian people and its cause at all Arab and international fora.
Talks between Abbas and Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) leaders to set up a national unity government have been deadlocked amid clashes in recent weeks between the rival groups of Abbas' Fatah movement and the ruling Hamas.
Fatah has accused Hamas, which remains adamant on its stance of refusing to recognize Israel or honor past agreements reached between the PNA and Israel, of impeding the process of the talks on a coalition government.
