Militants attacked downtown Srinagar Sunday, summer capital of India-controlled Kashmir, killing one policeman and critically injuring another, Indo-Asian News Service reported.
The militants fired at two policemen in Lal Chowk, the city's shopping centers where hundreds of residents were busy shopping for the Muslim Eid festival, the local police said.
One policeman died after being sent to the hospital, said Anand Jain, the area superintendent of the police.
The militants quickly escaped after the attack, he said.
"I saw the two cops lying on the road in a pool of blood. It happened in a matter of seconds. Sound of pistol fire and when I looked around the two policemen were profusely bleeding," said Manzoor, a bystander.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
