A budget of around 350,000 U.S. dollars was dedicated to organizing the under-18s and under-21s World Archery Championships, which runs from Sunday until the following Sunday, the president of the National Sport and Physical Culture Commission told media Friday.
Nelson Vargas, the Commission president, said the budget for the event was the shared input of both state and federal governments, as well as the private sector.
The contest takes place in Merida, capital of the southeastern state of Yucatan. It has attracted 518 archers from 52 countries and regions. The final for the world's top 16 archers, takes place in the Mayap archeological area.
Yucatan's director of sport, Cesar Arjona, told media that in his opinion the money was an investment not simply a spend, because it brought in tourists and stimulated young people in Yucatan to take up the sport.
