Construction of a glass fiber network started in Amsterdam on Thursday in a project that will connect 40,000 households in Zeeburg, Osdorp and Amsterdam Oost, Dutch media reported on Friday.
The super-fast internet connection will be constructed in partnership with five housing corporations and private investors.
The Amsterdam city council wants to construct the internet connection to enable it to compete with other world cities such as Paris, Cologne and Milan, which already have similar networks.
Subscribers with a connection can simultaneously telephone, go online and watch high-quality television, Dutch news service NIS reported.
Work is expected to be completed in 2008, but it is not yet clear when other city districts will have access to the new network.
